Adapted Single Arm Cable Rows

Cable row exercises are a great way to strengthen some of the muscles in your back, upper trunk, and arms including the trapezius muscles, latissimus dorsi, and biceps.

Shepherd Center has created a video showing how a C5/6 quadriplegic can complete single arm cable rows using a couple adaptive devices. With the aid of a trainer or assistant, here are the steps to follow to complete a cable row.

  1. First, position your wheelchair in front of the cable system, making sure the pulley is just below chest level.

  2. Next, use an assistive grasping device that will help you maintain a firm grip on the handle of the cable.

  3. Then, be sure to secure your trunk to your chair by using a trunk strap that wraps around both you and your chair.

  4. Attach the cable handle to the assistive grasping device of one hand.

  5. Then in a steady motion, pull the cable toward your body keeping your palm facing in and your elbow tucked.

  6. Repeat using the other arm.
