How to Dig a Hole and Weed a Garden

Paul, a C5/C6 quadriplegic, adapted his own shovel to be able to dig a hole and weed in his garden without moving his fingers.

“I adapted this shovel from a small hand trowel. I drilled a hole in the end of this broomstick, put this trowel in there, fitted it in, put a hose clamp on here and tightened it down.”

This way Paul can dig in his garden without having to lean over too far in his manual wheelchair. He inserts the trowel into the soil, pushes down on the handle, and begins to dig.

“You can also use this shovel to get rid of weeds,” says Paul. “Just turn them over and chop them to death.”
