Adaptive Surfing for the Adventure Seekers

Hitting the waves is possible for paraplegics and quadriplegics through adaptive surfing programs and organizations. Life Rolls On is dedicated to creating possibilities and opportunities beyond paralysis, and adaptive surfing allows more people to “experience the freedom of mobility by riding a wave”.

Life Rolls On provides surfboards of varied adaptations for different levels of injuries. When events are held, plenty of volunteers are on hand. Typically each surfer will have around 30 water volunteers to assist them at all varying water levels.

Before heading out to the beach, it is important to check with a physician to determine if you are suitable for an activity like adaptive surfing. Other safety measures that you should look out for is to keep yourself hydrated and to protect your skin from the harsh sun. It is also important to know and recognize the signs and symptoms of autonomic dysreflexia, a condition that could result in potentially life-threatening hypertension for some people with spinal cord injuries. Medical personnel are always available at Life Rolls On events should any participants require assistance.

With assistive equipment and volunteer support, Life Rolls On’s adaptive surfing programs offer the exhilarating experience of riding the waves to feel the cool saltwater air in your face. Check out this video to see what it is like at one of their events:

So, if you are looking for a thrill, why not consider adaptive surfing? Check out Life Rolls On for more information regarding the different events they host. And share this post with someone who wants to try adaptive surfing!
