Device Allows High-Level Quads to Bowl

“I bowl with my mouth,” says Bill Miller, a C1/C2 quadriplegic. “It’s a whole lot of fun. I’m paralyzed from my neck down and on a ventilator and yet I can bowl.”

Bill uses a device he himself helped invent called The IKAN Bowler, a ramp that attaches to the front of a wheelchair. An assistant places a bowling ball at the top of the ramp, then the user drives forward and comes to a stop causing the ball to roll down the ramp and onto the lane toward the pins. Bill talks about how using the IKAN allows even the highest level quadriplegics with no arm movement to participate in bowling.

“People who have never seen it before are generally pretty amazed at what we can do.”

Bill recently attended a bowling fundraiser in Tampa, FL where he and Romy Camargo, also a quadriplegic, used the IKAN to participate in the tournament.
