Valuable Relationships and Disability

In 1996, when Mark was 28 years old, he met with an accident that left him as a paraplegic. Since his accident, Mark feels that he has gained more valuable relationships with his family and friends.

“I think things like this always pull families together, teach them the value.”

Mark has noticed an increased support from people around him. “I have more friends and supporters, and family ties were certainly strengthened,” he says. Likewise, he observes that he now has more opportunities to meet people from all walks of life, people that he “probably never would’ve met even if [he] wasn’t injured.”

“I’m the same guy. I just do what I do sitting down, and I’m still a fun guy to hang out with.”

Forging relationships has played a big role in Mark’s life, and he is confident that he sets the tone for showing people that he, and other individuals with disabilities, “can live a successful life.”
