Traveling Checklist: Make Traveling Less Daunting

“Traveling for some is a daunting process,” says Eric Mulhrad, who has a spinal cord injury. Eric travels for work often. He says one of the key aspects when traveling with a disability is to make a list of all the questions to ask and things to prepare ahead of time.

“While (traveling) has led to many great adventures and experiences, it is a process that presents many easily overcome-able challenges.”

Here are some questions Eric suggests to put on your travel list:

Hotels – Write down all of the accommodations you require. For instance, does your hotel room have a roll in shower? Eric states that you would be surprised how many hotels actually do.

Transportation – Eric suggests that if you are traveling by plane to call the airline beforehand and request bulkhead or front row seating as there is more leg room and the seats are easier to get to. Two questions to consider adding to your list for when you reach your destination are, “Can you rent a wheelchair accessible van? Can they pick you up from the airport?”

Eric says having as many of the comforts that you have at home will make traveling much easier to deal with. He advises having your list ready because you are going to forget things. Add to your list throughout your trip. See something you like? Write it down, make sure to get all the details.

Follow Eric’s advice to be more prepared when traveling.
