Melanie Dunston recently graduated from our 13-week Pathways to Employment Work Readiness program. In this Q-and-A, she shares some of what she learned and the ways the program personally supported her in her mission to become employed.
Why did you join the work readiness program?
Lesly St. Louis made it comfortable for me to sign up for the cohort—and also have a voice. He made it easy to have an understanding about the class and the agenda. That’s why I joined.
What impact did the program have on your employment journey?
A big impact. I’ve been disabled for over 20 years. For 20 years, I just received a check and volunteered. A lot of people with disabilities volunteer a lot, because we’re still able to do certain types of work. But you feel like your disability check is the only value you really have.
To learn that I’m capable of work by testing where I’m at now made me feel good. I hadn’t updated my resume or had a mock interview in years. These classes were awesome preparation. They got me ready!
Why would you recommend that others join the Work Readiness program?
The most important thing is leadership. Lesly was always available and approachable. There’s nothing worse than when you have a question, and you keep on calling and calling, and no one returns your phone call. Every time I emailed or called, Lesly was available. I wasn’t left hanging or not knowing something.
