Memorial Day is a day for remembering the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have given their lives to protect our freedom.
Memorial Day weekend is also a time when many Americans officially welcome in the summer months, enjoying the company of family and friends, backyard barbecues and outdoor activities.
This year, as we cope with the challenges of Covid-19, quarantines and social distancing have made it difficult to honor the memory of our veterans in meaningful ways and participate in traditions that define us. But we will persevere.
As we reflect on the ultimate sacrifice of the men and women who have proudly served, and mourn the veterans and all Americans who have succumbed fighting this pandemic, one truth remains clear; our country is resilient.
During our darkest hours, the American spirit has always shone through. We have faced adversity head on; bonding together, supporting one another, and making sacrifices for the good of our country.
This Memorial Day, let’s try to keep this all in mind.
There is also some good news as we approach the holiday weekend. VA cemeteries are open to the public, and Arlington National Cemetery is open to family pass holders.
