Persevering Towards The Future You Want

At birth, Ali was without oxygen for 2 minutes, and nurses were afraid he would not survive. But he did survive, and throughout his life, he has found ways to keep surviving – keep thriving.

Ali was born in Algeria. When he was 2 years old, he was diagnosed with low tone cerebral palsy, and he began both physical and speech therapy at that time. Ali attended public school throughout his youth and teen years, and was assisted often by his younger sister during his schooling. When he first began school, Ali says “Because of my handicap, some people were against my entrance.” He also shares some difficulties he encountered while in high school.

“There were many persons who saw me for the first time, and they ignored me thinking that I was dumb, but after getting to know me, they changed their attitude toward me.”

During this time in Ali’s life, he began asking himself questions about his future. He was concerned about the prospect of not being able to find work without getting his diploma. And since he was still dependent on his parents, he wondered if he would ever find a partner in life who would want to marry him. He often asked himself, “Is there a purpose for me in this life?”

But instead of continuing to ask questions that only fueled his worry, Ali took action. He credits his determination and faith for giving him the push he needed. And what followed was a series of events that would shape his adult life.

In 2005, Ali began studying computer science at university. He graduated with an engineering degree in 2011. Then in 2013, he obtained his Visa and moved to New York. Two years later, he married a wonderful woman.

Ali shares his story of perseverance in the hope that it will have a positive effect on people living with disabilities who may have lost their faith in life.

“My future goal is to be an inspiration for others who are in moral difficulties. I want to help them to get through bullying and negative thoughts because I do believe that everyone here in this world has a purpose.”

Thank you to Ali Bennour for sharing his story of how he pushed forward in life despite difficulties. Share this post with someone who could use a reminder that perseverance is a powerful force.
