A Paraplegic’s Message of Encouragement

When Froy, a T11 paraplegic, was injured from a gunshot wound as a teenager, he thought his life was over. It was advice from his father that helped Froy begin to see his life from a new perspective:

“There are so many things you can no longer do. You can no longer compete at an even level. So, you must always find an edge to win. You now have physical limitations but your mind is still unlimited. Use it to gain an edge and WIN this game of life!”

Froy took his father’s advice and began to seek out career opportunities to find his passion. He tried many things: teaching, public speaking, website development, and financial management. And while he gained valuable skills in these areas, he was still searching for something more.

That’s when he discovered poker, something he has been pursuing for the last four years. “Poker is like a business with its own overhead expenses; sometimes, you win, sometimes, you don’t,” says Froy. “It requires a lot of knowledge and skills to become a poker player.” Other aspects like financial management and emotional control play a huge role in Froy’s life as a poker player. “My passion and level of interest hasn’t reduced but instead, it just keep on increasing,” says Froy.

He wants to help others who have faced life-changing injuries like him to find their passions – to discover what makes them tick.

Here’s his advice on how to begin down that path:

  • really find yourself; sometimes, you need to get lost (step out of your comfort zone or do things you’ve never done before) to really find yourself
  • discover all the things that you can still do
  • follow your heart
  • pursue your passion
  • find your purpose in life

“Don’t just survive… LIVE!!!” advises Froy. “I love helping and motivating others, encouraging and empowering others to discover their passion in life, to follow their hearts, pursue their dreams, and live life to the fullest. Never ever let what you cannot do stop you from doing the things you can still do.”
