Paraplegic Conquers Adversity

Glenn and his family faced an unexpected life change when he suffered an unprovoked disc rupture that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Glenn faced challenges when he got home, and had to make major changes to his home, so he could get around. He also recalls simple everyday things that became challenging, such as dressing and bathing. Glenn describes how he eventually established a daily routine. He learned how to drive and stayed active through skiing and golf.

“Although not the same as before, it’s still an enjoyable experience.”

After Christopher Reeve encouraged Glenn to use his leadership skills as an advocate for others, Glenn testified before the state legislature in favor of stem cell research. He also shared his story in the Harvard Business review.

“People won’t remember how far you fall, but rather how high you bounce back.”

Glenn believes that we should accept any adversity we face and use it to fuel resilience. “When you move forward,” says Glenn, “you’ll reap the rewards and realize what you’re made of.”
