Have you seen the television show the “Good Doctor”? Before the show aired on ABC, 20/20 featured an episode on Tyler Sexton, a board certified pediatrician, who was born with cerebral palsy. Tyler is medical director of pediatrics at Singing River Hospital.

One can usually find Tyler wearing a Batman shirt making his rounds with his service dog by his side keeping him steady on his feet. Tyler says that bringing superheroes into his office and exam rooms helps build a connection between him and the children he treats.
Tyler states that he had to overcome a great amount of prejudice to enter the medical field. In college, his advisors would try to deter Tyler from entering the medical field. So, Tyler would go from advisor to advisor until one gave him guidance for accomplishing his dream of becoming a doctor.
“I wanted to be a doctor to give hope to people. All my life, doctors told me ‘You’ll never do this. You’ll never do that. All you’ll be able to do is sharpen pencils.’ ”
Tyler was rejected from several medical schools and thrown out of rotations with other medical students because he had a service dog. But because of ADA laws, Tyler was able to complete medical school with his dog there to assist him.
Tyler puts his patients” care first. He wants to motivate others and to let people know that “you can’t let your circumstances define you.”
