It’s CRT Awareness Week!
This is our community’s chance to create a better understanding of what Complex Rehab Technology is and why protecting access to it is so important.
Complex Rehab Technology includes:
- Individually configured power and manual wheelchairs
- Seating and positioning equipment
- Gait trainers
- Standing devices
- Additional adaptive equipment designed to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities.
These three wheelchair users on United Spinal’s staff share the importance of Complex Rehab Technology and how it protects their health and maximizes their independence:
Annie’s specialized power wheelchair
“My power wheelchair and its multiple features are what give me independence. Whether it is taking my dog for a walk, shopping, raising my chair for high counters or tables, travel and work … the list goes on and on. I could not live this healthy, productive, and fulfilling life without my wheelchair,” says Annie Streit, Grassroots Advocacy Manager.
“Some other features that truly help are my headlights/taillights for safety, the ability to raise my feet to help with pain and circulation, and the recline and tilt functions to prevent any pressure sores.”

Matt’s SmartDrive and FreeWheel
“The greatest pieces of equipment I use are the SmartDrive combined with the FreeWheel. With these two pieces of equipment, I can access most terrains with confidence and independence. I use this combination to be able to manage all the gardening around my house, the shoveling of snow, and coaching my kid’s sports,” says Matt Castelluccio, VP of Community Support.
“I have used many other adaptive equipments over the years that cluttered my shed and garage. But these two pieces of equipment were the best purchases I have ever made.”

Shannon’s KAFOs and standing frame
“As a wheelchair user, I spend a lot of time sitting which can cause muscle tightness, loss of bone density and pressure sores. Using my standing frame and KAFOs regularly helps to prevent these issues while also improving circulation and retaining muscle mass. Standing, which I would be unable to do without these devices, improves my overall well-being and quality of life,” says Shannon Kelly, Senior Marketing Specialist.
“Insurance companies should prioritize the value that they bring to wheelchair users and realize the potential they have in preventative care.”
