It took this quadriplegic about 2 years to master opening double doors on his own. He came up with a method that allows him to open double doors safely and efficiently that allows him to travel to the mall or grocery stores without having to worry about needing help to get inside.
He starts off by backing up his chair so his wheels hit one of the sides of the door, getting an able to put his arm through the handle on the other side of the door. While bracing himself against the one leaf, with one swift motion he throws out the other door and slips his hand on the inside. Once it’s inside, and again while his chair is anchored, he pushes it open enough to swing his feet inside. Once his feet are in, he’s able to push the door the rest of the way open and with one last turn, he’s in!
