In 2018, Madison Russell began using a wheelchair. Today, she is a passionate advocate for the advancement of accessible technologies for all people with disabilities. With your support, United Spinal Association can continue to equip young wheelchair users like Madison in their mission to create a more inclusive society.
“Shortly after I was diagnosed with syringomyelia, I found United Spinal. I finally had all this information that I didn’t have before, and I realized there were other people like me out there,” says Madison.
Establishing connections with fellow wheelchair users and their families is essential. United Spinal’s Peer Support program provides mentors and resources to cultivate a strong sense of community, mutual understanding and sharing experiences.
By joining the United Spinal Association community, wheelchair users and their loved ones can meet others in similar situations. They can share valuable guidance and collectively advocate for their shared needs.
“I didn’t know anybody in my hometown, or in Atlanta in general, that had any spinal cord issues. Realizing that the community exists was really huge for me. I got so much information about adaptive sports I didn’t know existed in the area.”
Through our expansive chapter network, wheelchair users can find support and resources locally. We have over 50 chapters nationwide that provide events and opportunities for connection in their geographic area. Our chapters are instrumental in advocating for rights and accessibility in their communities.

“The first thing I became involved with was grassroots advocacy. I had already been doing this on my own, trying to make things more accessible at my college. In 2022, I joined the board of United Spinal Atlanta as the VP for Advocacy.”
United Spinal raises awareness and advocates for the rights and needs of all people living with spinal cord injuries and disorders. We mobilize our members, supporters and allies to participate in advocacy campaigns, contact elected officials and share their personal stories to effect positive change. We ensure the voices of those with SCI/D are heard, leading to meaningful legislative and policy reforms that enhance the rights and opportunities of all wheelchair users.
“In 2020, I became involved with the tech access group by attending the Tech Talks and meetings. I was going to college for human-centered computing, so I was very familiar with assistive technology. We had sessions with different companies, which was really neat.”
The Tech Access Group at United Spinal plays a crucial role in enhancing the lives of wheelchair users by providing valuable support and resources in the realm of assistive technology. Members of the Tech Access Group receive guidance, training, and information on adaptive technologies to leverage the power of technology. Whether through workshops, consultations, or online resources, this group equips individuals with the knowledge and tools needed to make informed technology decisions and lead more self-reliant and fulfilling lives.
