UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center
UAB Spain Rehabilitation Center (SRC) is one of the southeast’s leading providers of physical medicine and rehabilitation services. Our team provides inpatient and outpatient care and conducts important research to help improve the long-term function and quality of life for patients with an injury or disability. As one of 18 Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems in the country, the UAB SCI Model System available at Spain Rehabilitation Center has been continually funded since 1972 and remains the longest continually funded system in existence. This distinctive designation is based on providing the highest level of care, research, and education related to spinal cord injury. Our SCI Model System offers an Information Network for the spinal cord injury community, providing an array of resources, research opportunities, and health and quality of life information for people with spinal cord injury and their families. SRC also features the National SCI Statistical Center (NSCISC), the world’s longest active SCI research database. Continuously funded since 1983, the NSCISC is the world’s most extensive source of available information about the characteristics and life course of individuals with traumatic SCI. SRC is the only center in the nation that features all three advanced clinical resources – the SCI Model System, the TBI Model System, and the NSCISC.
Open in 2025, a new state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital replaces the existing Spain Rehabilitation Center and builds on our nationally recognized reputation of providing the highest level of rehabilitative care tailored to the specific needs of patients and their families from across Alabama and beyond. The 11-story facility, featuring 78 rehabilitation beds and 56 acute care beds, includes a focus on neurorehabilitation for patients following traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and stroke with a dedicated floor serving patients in each of these clinical areas.
