If you are a wheelchair user, there are many options for accessible gardening. One option is to use a raised bed that a wheelchair can fit under or a bigger accessible box garden, bringing the soil up closer for you to work with. But if you don’t have access to a raised bed, and if you don’t mind a little bending, consider planting a garden using pots.
First Joseph lines up the pots in an ideal spot in his front yard where “they should get sunlight most of the day,” he says.
Once the pots are filled with soil, Joseph wheels up to them and begins the task of planting the seeds. He uses his index finger to make grooves in the soil, and he plants a variety of vegetables including string beans, carrots, beets, and peppers.
After watering daily, fast forward four weeks and Joseph has the beginnings of a beautiful vegetable garden.
