Embracing Wheels as Legs

Jesi’s world was turned upside down when she became a paraplegic from a motorcycle accident. Soon after her injury, she took part in a clinical trial where a tiny device called a neuro spinal scaffold was implanted in her back. The device is designed to support undamaged nerve cells within the first few weeks following an injury.

It’s been two years since Jesi had the device implanted. Initially Jesi was optimistic about the device helping her to fully regain function and movement. And while she has been able to regain some function following her injury, at her last checkup, a year after the device was implanted, her official diagnosis had not changed.

But what had changed was Jesi’s outlook.

“When I first got hurt, I hated every minute of it, and then I found a way to live.”

Now Jesi is an active young woman who competes in off-road races, adaptive water skiing, and beauty pageants for women with disabilities. She also works full time in sales for a catheter supply company, and is an advocate for people living with spinal cord injuries. “I really just want to show people that there is life to be had in the wheelchair,” she shares. “There is life to be had with wheels as legs.”

Share this post with others to show them all that is possible with wheels as legs.
