Disability on the big screen at ReelAbilities Film Festival: New York

Mark your calendars for the 16th Annual ReelAbilities Film Festival: New York! From April 3-10, they will be showcasing riveting films and engaging conversations in venues throughout NY and online, celebrating disability, inclusion and accessibility.

“These films are not just inclusive, they are first and foremost great films, and happen to highlight a variety of important topics such as disability inclusion, human rights, and other social issues.” says Isaac Zablocki, ReelAbilities’ co-founder and director. “This is our most diverse lineup to date and we are proud to feature authentic and first-person stories that bring these underserved images to the surface in the most responsible and engaging manner.”

While the lineup includes films featuring a large range of disabilities, here are a few that showcase wheelchair users specifically.

When day-drinking, unemployed paraplegic Patrick finds out he is the father of a 4-year-old girl he never knew existed, he enlists the help of his double amputee veteran neighbor Robert to drive him and his newfound daughter across the country to live with her maternal grandparents.

Donald

A dancer moves with his wheelchair in surprising ways, pushing the art form’s boundaries, as he prepares for a live performance.

My Eyes Are Up Here

A broken condom sends a woman and her one-night stand out for the morning-after pill. Except it’s not so simple: she’s disabled, a woman of color, and around her, people magically transform into jerks. An eye-opening odyssey for him, just another day for her.
