Technology sure does help bring people together – and that was the case for Diana and her friend, Jenise. Through Facebook, Diana recently found out that Jenise was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2015, and had fortunately not been experiencing any new lesions.
While news about Jenise’s MS was a little belated, it didn’t stop Diana from reaching out to her. Diana, who was diagnosed with MS herself in 2012, had an extensive range of information and tips that she was eager to share with Jenise, from coping with MS and depression to her favorite brand of vitamins and inflammatory foods. But Diana decided to save these tips for later, knowing that for now, her support and friendship comes first.
Jenise warmly accepted Diana’s support and, “as MSers do, offered [Diana] hers.” Diana admits that she was initially saddened that Jenise has MS, because “she didn’t deserve [it].” Then again, nobody does. But after catching up with Jenise and hearing that she was doing well, Diana was comforted and happy for her friend.
The number of MS cases continue to increase every year, with an estimated number of 400,000 people with MS in the United States alone. Meeting people with MS or people who know someone else with MS has become a common experience for Diana, and she very much wishes that this wasn’t the case.
“I wish I knew less people with MS, or more accurately, I wish less people had MS.”
Till that happens, what Diana will continue to do is to offer her support and friendship to her fellow peers who have MS, ensuring that nobody has to undergo this experience alone.
