“The first six months was tough because I’m just basically learning to live with this disability. It’s very draining at times.”
Eric, a quadriplegic in Singapore, was sustained by his faith and the support he got from his friends and family. “I still can’t really come to terms with needing help from people,” he admits. Coming to terms with it affected his ego and was mentally exhausting.
The benefit of settling into a routine
“After the first year, things start to get better as you settle into a routine,” Eric shares. ” He’s learned to ask for help when he needs it and not let it be a barrier. He can still be discouraged from time to time, but “you just need to take life as it comes.” For any of us who have been impacted traumatically by paralysis, it takes time to adjust, but there are many who have made life work. It’s just a matter of finding meaning in your life again on your terms.
