Coming Home: Caring for Your Mental Health

Patricia’s son Greg sustained a spinal cord injury in 2011. Greg became a paraplegic. Patricia states that in coming home, Greg had to learn how to cope with his mental health along with his physical well being.

Patricia insinuates that her son’s life had taken a turn when he moved back home from getting his master’s degree. Greg’s relationship with his girlfriend of eight years had just ended, and Greg often talked about suicide.

Patricia discusses the moment when her son was institutionalized. She recalls coming home to three police cars in her yard with Greg on the phone threatening to commit suicide. Greg was admitted to an inpatient rehab where he stayed one week. Patricia recalls the change she had witnessed in her son’s demeanor after that week. She says that her son’s stay in rehab gave him a new perspective on life.

“That gave him an entirely new perspective on life and that he doesn’t have it half as bad as some people.”
