With an adventurous spirit, Jesi Stracham, continued to pursue her love for extreme sports and adventure after her injury. In January 2015, she suffered a spinal cord injury when she was hit by a car while riding a motorcycle.

Being a pro racer before her accident, Jesi has since returned to racing, and participated in this year’s Wheelchair Motocross World Championships. Besides that, she has also tried out various physical activities since last January, including skiing, white water rafting, and zip-lining, to name a few. She did not want to let her injury waste any valuable time for her.

“When I got out of the hospital, I had no limbo period. I like to be independent. More people need to push for independence and get that back.”

Besides sports, Jesi will also be representing North Carolina in the Ms. Wheelchair America pageant in 2016. She hopes to lead by example, particularly to people with spinal cord injuries, and illuminate the possibilities they can achieve. And her impact is certainly felt, with parents and children approaching her to thank her for empowering and motivating them.

Jesi has embraced herself and her identity whole-heartedly, pushing her limits and living her life to the fullest.

“I’ve gotten to live life more than most people do in their entire lifetime. I’m having an absolute blast in my wheelchair.”
