Paraplegic Manages Spasms

Ahmet Cunmulaj, a T5 paraplegic, gives advice and demonstrates how he manages leg spasms.

Ahmet recommends stretching your legs out every morning before getting out of bed. “…when you get up for the day stretch (your legs) out. Pull your calf back, kick (your legs) out and then bend your knee to your chest type thing,” he says.

If your legs start to spasm before you begin to transfer, Ahmet suggests to let them “shake” and calm down before moving.

“Cause the way I see it, when (your legs) are shaking it is because you haven’t moved them in a while.”

Ahmet states he usually lets his legs shake themselves out before he leans over to apply pressure on his legs. Applying pressure to his legs helps settle his calves from shaking. Ahmet then adjusts his feet on his footrest.

Everyone’s body is different. Find a stretch that works for you!
