Written from the perspective of Julia, a young girl with an adventurous spirit and a big heart, this book features the relationship Julia has with her dad who uses a wheelchair for mobility.

From playing in the park together, to fishing off a dock, to camping under the stars, Julia and her dad enjoy spending time together exploring their surroundings.

The book also aims to educate, with Julia explaining how disability can be something you’re born with or something you acquire in life. One family has found this book particularly useful in helping their daughter understand her father’s spinal cord injury.

“Our daughter was 4 years old when my husband was injured, and this is the first children’s book we got after Jeff came home from rehab. We read it with our daughter, and she loved it. She pointed out the similarities and the differences to our situation. I highly recommend this book for other families who want to help educate their children about disability and inclusion.”

Other readers are saying Dad Has a Wheelchair is a “wonderful book” and the illustrator captures “all of the realistic details that go along with using a wheelchair.” The themes of “kindness, helping others and community” are highlighted throughout, and readers are shown “how having a disability just means doing things together in a different way.”

Both children and adults can find meaning in this book about the love between a dad and his daughter.
