Quadriplegic Buckles a Car Seat

Meg demonstrates how to buckle and unbuckle her toddler into a car seat once inside her vehicle. Meg is a C6 quadriplegic with limited arm mobility and no finger function. She requires some assistance from her daughter inside the car seat to securely strap in. By stretching to lean over into the back seat from the driver’s seat, she gathers the belt connectors across her daughter, Zula’s chest.

She finds all the end pieces and fastens the connecting pieces safely, clicking them into place. Zula helps steady the belts and offers resistance so Meg can click them together. Then Meg secures the bottom pieces from under her child’s legs to complete the 5-point harness connection.

Meg stops several times to catch her breath, to adjust and reposition herself in the process. This helps channel her strength and stay focused on her end goal of safely strapping her little one in.

“Being a mom is hard, not just for me, but for everybody.”

Next comes unbuckling. To unbuckle, Meg first unfastens the top chest buckle. Then with the help of her daughter, Meg pinches the red release button closed so the top belts can unfasten, and Zula pulls out the two straps to assist in the activity. Zula is then free and rejoices with Meg in their victorious teamwork at getting buckled and unbuckled together.
