Alicia likes wearing skirts – though her legs don’t always cooperate. As a wheelchair user, her legs have a mind of their own, so they often widen under her skirt. Some people experience a different appearance while wearing skirts in a chair, says Alicia, when tightened inner thigh muscles make it hard to separate your legs.
Alicia shares her simple fix for uncooperative legs: she uses a soft strap covered with medical tape to hold her legs together under her skirt. She slides the strap up over her shoes, and under her skirt up to her knees, and it holds her legs together.
Alicia appreciates the more polished look she achieves with her legs held together, because, she says, it makes her skirt present better.
On one occasion, Alicia traveled to Ohio, but forgot to pack her strap. She found a simple and effective replacement: a soft knit headband. The headband worked like a charm because it stretched and went around her legs. When making a leg strap, Alicia recommends using something soft and wide that will span more of your skin, not a shoestring, she cautions.
“Just get creative.”
