When it comes to the everyday task of opening a refrigerator, Meg Johnson, a C5/6 quadriplegic, demonstrates how she does it!
“This is actually kind of a really cool skill that I learned when I first came home from the hospital,” says Meg. She remembers what it was like when she was newly paralyzed and wondered how she would open the refrigerator door with hands that didn’t work.
“When I was first looking at my fridge, I just had two floppy, flimsy paralyzed hands, and so learning to open the fridge was a real trick.”
So how does she do it?
Meg has a split fridge/freezer combo with the fridge on the right side and the freezer on the left.
To open the fridge, follow Meg’s instruction as she puts her hand under the fridge handle. “I slide my hand down the middle like this, then I lean away from the door I want to open, and then I twist my hand.”
Now watch her demonstrate this essential skill!
