Some might say a vacation is a time to let loose and relax and experience new things at the spur of the moment. However, for a person with a disability to gain those life life long experiences, a well thought out plan is most likely required.

Toyah Wordsworth, who has ataxia, writes about her travels in New Zealand. She utilized the travel expertise of Kiwi Accessible Tours for her adventures. This organization makes it possible for people with disabilities to experience a vacation without the hassle of having to plan everything out. Tour packages are offered that accommodate different needs based on the individual, and all packages include an accessible vehicle.
Toyah and her caregiver were met by their tour guide Kas shortly after arriving at Auckland airport. From there, they set off in the accessible mini bus (driven by Kas) to begin exploring New Zealand. Toyah boasts about how Kas was so knowledgeable about accessibility
“After arriving at Auckland airport, we were met by our tour guide, Kas, who was extremely helpful and very knowledgeable about New Zealand; including knowing where all the accessible toilets are. Kas took us in her accessible minibus (in which we travelled for the whole tour) to the Rydges hotel, located in the city centre.”
Toyah’s New Zealand vacation included:
- Staying in a hotel located in city centre
- Having dinners in places like Sky Tower, a revolving restaurant with a 360 degree view
- Visiting the Auckland Museum
- Going to destinations such as Coromandel Bay and the Bay of Plenty
- And much more!
Toyah celebrated her 30th birthday while on the trip with a day of canoeing, a Mauri massage, and a barbeque on the beach. She says her New Zealand holiday would not have been possible if it wasn’t for her all-inclusive travel package.
“Overall I think New Zealand is a brilliant holiday destination as it has something for everyone, disabled or not. But, most importantly, the accessibility for wheelchair users is brilliant.”
