Adding Diversity to Modeling

Known as the ‘Bionic Model’, Rebekah Marine is a great role model who advocates for inclusion both on and off the runway. Born without a right forearm, Rebekah has redefined the definition of beauty as a successful fashion model.

Fashion has always played a big role in Rebekah’s life. As a young girl, she loved playing dress-up.

“It was only when I became very insecure about my ‘disability’ that I started to wear baggier clothes.”

When Rebekah decided to be a fashion model, entering the fashion industry was equally challenging and rewarding for her.

“It’s not easy to be vulnerable and open about something I felt very insecure about, but knowing that it helps others not feel alone is what makes it all worth it. IIt’s so deeply important that we show diversity in fashion because people need to see themselves in clothing.”

Another exciting project Rebekah recently landed is being a brand ambassador for Runway of Dreams, a foundation that works towards making clothes adaptive and wearable for all. Rebekah recalls her own struggles with zippering and buttoning her clothes in the past, so this partnership was a natural fit.

Apart from modeling, Rebekah also mentors children with limb differences. One of the core messages Rebekah has for children, including the child-version of herself, is:

“You’re awesome the way that you are, and don’t let anyone tell you differently.”

As for the future of fashion, Rebekah is optimistic that a new revolution will emerge in the next few years, and more diversity will represent the face of fashion.
