When it comes to transfers that are done without hoists or harnesses, it’s all about technique.
Aaron, a quadriplegic, shares a video of how he is transferred from his wheelchair to a mat. His caregiver crosses Aaron’s arms in front of him and positions her legs on either side of his. Bending her knees (NOT her back), she reaches behind Aaron under his arms to scoot him forward on his cushion by grabbing the top seam of his pants. When she’s ready for the big move, with her head on Aaron’s shoulder in the direction he’s transferring, she rocks him forward and makes a final lift using the seam on his pants. Ta da!
