Recovering From Falling Backwards

Falling backwards in a wheelchair is no picnic, but with some practice and preparation, you can not only learn to fall safely but also to recover.

As Erik, a paraplegic, falls backward, he uses his arm to support himself and control the fall. It might not be available in all situations, but he’s got it down. To get up again, Erik keeps the same hand on the ground and with a slight twist to the side he’s able to right his chair. He makes it look easy, but no doubt it takes some getting used to.

Erik has 22+ years of being a paraplegic under his belt, so be sure to take the necessary safety precautions should you choose to try his methods. Thanks to Erik Kondo for this great demo.
