The First Things To Learn After Spinal Cord Injury

When you are first touched by paralysis, many will ask themselves, “What do I learn first?” or “Where do I start?” Kris Cichowski from the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago shares tips on getting started.

“It’s very important that you get very clear and understandable medical information. You really need to understand what a spinal cord injury is, what it impacts in your body, so that you can take care of your body.”

It’s important to take time to understand your body on another level, including understanding skin, how to protect it and how it breaks down, your respiratory system, and managing bowel and bladder. It’s important to be as informed as possible so you can learn to manage your new body and avoid any potential complications. “It’s helpful to see yourself as a student,” she says. “If you can get that under your belt and identify what needs to be done for your health, then the avenue of getting on with your life is going to be even broader.”

Have conversations with your medical provider and be informed to minimize your risks ahead and maximize your potential to live a fulfilling life. You can watch her video here for more information.
