According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, just 19.3 percent of people with disabilities were employed in 2019. In contrast, the employment-population ratio for people without disabilities was 66.3 percent.
United Spinal is proactively working to change these trends. We not only fully support the pursuit of job opportunities for people with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D), but work closely with employers interested in hiring people with disabilities.
Our Pathways to Employment (PTE) program provides access to resources for people who want to return to work, including information about benefits, transitioning to employment, how-to guides, and guidance on removing barriers to employment and access to mentors who have successfully returned to work after a spinal cord injury or diagnosis.
As part of our ongoing efforts to empower job seekers, we have produced a series of how-to videos that offer solid guidance on getting hired. The videos are specifically tailored for wheelchair users and other people with disabilities that are looking for basic information to get started in their job search. From addressing the misconceptions of returning to work, to highlighting employment rights and job interview tips, we have you covered!
If you find the videos useful please share them with others, and be sure to visit our Pathways to Employment program page for other great information and resources.
