The holidays are often a time for celebrating and gathering together with friends and family. Despite the joy being spread during this time of year, stress has a way of creeping into just about everyone’s schedule. Caregivers are particularly prone to the effects of stress during the holidays.
If you are a caregiver, here are 5 tips that just might help keep holiday stress to a minimum this year.
Get Organized With a Calendar
Sometimes keeping a calendar during the holidays can unintentionally cause more stress because you have everything you have to get done written down all in one place. First, consider making two lists: what you need to get done, and what you can delegate. Put only the time-sensitive and high-priority tasks that you plan to tackle on your calendar, then delegate the other tasks.
Say No and Don’t Feel Guilty
Saying no can be difficult. But saying yes to something you don’t truly have the time or effort for can leave you feeling drained and frustrated.
“Learning to say no to others is saying yes to yourself and the person you are caring for. It is not selfish to say no; it is empowering.”
Self-Care
Caregivers hear this one a lot. That’s probably because taking care of yourself is really important. While things like getting enough sleep, eating the right foods, and trying to fit in some exercise might be difficult when you’re taking care of someone else (and the holidays are upon you), they really will make a positive impact on your life. Shop Online
Oftentimes just getting out to a store is tough for a caregiver. With so much merchandise, food, and gifts available online, consider doing your shopping from your computer or smart phone this year.
Ask For Help
There is nothing wrong with asking for help. There are even several tools available to make collaboration easier. Use “Lotsa Helping Hands as an online toolbox to coordinate care and make life easier for you as a caregiver.”
