4 Ways To Get Through Difficult Times

We all face challenging situations in our lives, regardless of whether or not a disability is involved. What’s most important is having mechanisms of getting through difficult times. Oftentimes arriving at optimism and hope is not because bad things never happened, it’s because we make conscious efforts to adapt our mindsets and overcome.

Tasha Schuh, a motivational speaker and quadriplegic, has had her fair share of struggles, but has worked hard to find meaningful ways to positively impact her world view. “If you’re facing challenging times, perhaps some of these ideas would help you to find hope again, like they did me,” she shares on her blog.

  • Music – “I made CDs of positive, uplifting, and motivating songs that I listened to every morning when getting ready to uplift my mood and change my thoughts,” she shares. Not only did it lift her up, but it began to lift up everyone around her.
  • Reading – “Unbeknownst to me at the time, I was creating a whole new image on the inside of myself by reading these books and applying the principles I learned from them,” she says. Her top recommendations? “Power Thoughts” by Joyce Meyer, “So Long Insecurity: You Have Been a Bad Friend to Us” by Beth Moore and “The Search for Significance” by Robert McGee.
  • Prayer – Whatever your religious background, or even if you’re not religious at all, praying or meditating or whatever you do to center yourself during difficult times is valuable. “This gave me a sense of comfort,” she shares.
  • Positive Thoughts and Affirmations – “I started to write positive affirmations on my mirrors in my bathroom with erasable markers,” she shares. With phrases ranging from “I refuse to live in fear” to “I live in the present and enjoy each moment,” Tasha found words that made sense for what she was dealing with.

“While it didn’t happen overnight, I began to see that my thoughts in turn became my life. It is so important to know that your thoughts become your actions, and your actions become your destiny!”
