We’re set to Roll On Capitol Hill! With over 100 wheelchair users and member advocates, we will be raising awareness (and eyebrows) on critical issues impacting the spinal cord injury/disease and veteran communities.
Roll on Capitol Hill is United Spinal’s annual policy event that supports key advocacy priorities for the disability community to ensure that legislators include wheelchair users and all people with disabilities in policy discussions.
During The Roll, our advocates visit with and educate Congressional leaders about important issues affecting the spinal cord injury and disability community by sharing personal stories and some of the hurdles they face living with disabilities.
“The growth and impact of Roll on Capitol Hill over the years is a true testament to all the advocates that are determined to improve disability rights, not only in their communities, but on a national scale. This year will be our largest event yet,” said James Weisman, United Spinal’s president and CEO.
United Spinal Association builds on its strong advocacy work all year-round through participation in coalitions and partnerships and through its network of grassroots volunteer advocates. This process culminates in our Roll on Capitol Hill advocacy event.
This year advocates will talk to Congress about the following:
- Protecting the rights of air travelers with disabilities.
- Maximizing access to quality affordable healthcare for people with disabilities.
- Opposing the ADA Education and Reform Act.
- Supporting the rights of our disabled veterans by advocating for veterans benefits.
During the Roll on Capitol Hill Welcome Reception on the evening of Sunday, June 24th, Los Angeles comedian and wheelchair user Santina Muha will perform for attendees and discuss her passion for advocacy.
On the evening of June 26th, we will host a Congressional Awards Reception to recognize members of Congress as well as grassroots advocates for their outstanding service to people with disabilities and veterans:
- Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-GA) – 2018 James J. Peters Distinguished Veterans Legislator Award
- Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) – 2018 Outstanding Congressional Leadership Award
- Gretchelle Dilán – 2018 Outstanding Community Service Award
United Spinal will also honor two disability advocates that have shown advocacy leadership and dedication to, and success in, state and/or federal policy issue, or issues impacting the SCI/D or broader disability community.
This year Earle and Kathy Powdrell will receive the 2018 Finn Bullers Advocates of the Year Award for their advocacy efforts in Houston on behalf of the entire disability community.
