The Spinal Cord Injury Program at the Miami Valley Hospital (MVH) Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio provides comprehensive, advanced rehabilitative care and treatment for people with spinal cord injuries. We help these patients and their caregivers develop skills and strategies to move beyond the injury to live productive, independent lives.

Miami Valley Hospital’s Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio offers specialized outpatient programs that provide specific assessment and treatment programs for individuals with specialized needs.

Adapted Sports and Recreation Therapy

Recreation therapy is designed to reduce the effects of illness or injury and to improve function and independence. At the Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio, we see games and sports as valuable elements in life and therapy.

Aquatic Therapy

Miami Valley Hospital’s aquatic therapy program allows the patient to benefit from physical therapy treatment in a warm-water pool. The buoyancy of water decreases the effects of gravity on joints, balance, weight bearing, and venous blood pooling.

Balance and Vestibular Therapy

Specialized therapist will access your balance needs and provide a specialized plan of care.  We use the Balance Master to assess where patients balance dysfunction originates to treat them appropriately. Our therapist are also trained to treat your vestibular issues. Learn more

Incontinence and Pelvic Pain Program

The Incontinence and Pelvic Pain Program treats women and men with poor bladder or bowel control and/or pelvic pain. Our team of physical therapists is specially-trained to evaluate and provide treatment for pelvic pain and dysfunction.

Inpatient Rehabilitation Program

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Program at the Miami Valley Hospital Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio provides comprehensive, high-quality rehabilitative care for people who have experienced illness or injury.

Lymphedema Program

Although lymphedema is a debilitating progressive condition with no known cure, it’s important to know that it can be managed. Through the Lymphedema Program, we can help patients improve comfort and regain function.

Swallowing (Dysphagia) Program

The Swallowing (Dysphagia) Program at Miami Valley Hospital’s Rehabilitation Institute of Ohio provides comprehensive evaluation and therapy services to treat individuals who are experiencing difficulty swallowing.

Wheelchair and Adaptive Seating Clinic

Wheelchair use can be more involved than it might seem at first. We offer a regularly scheduled wheelchair clinic — a set of services designed to help patients have the greatest mobility possible, both at home and wherever they go in the community.

Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury can result in paralysis of the muscles used for breathing; paralysis and/or loss of feeling in all or some of the trunk, arms, and legs; weakness; numbness; loss of bowel and bladder control; and numerous secondary conditions including respiratory problems, pressure sores, and sometimes fatal spikes in blood pressure. Approximately 12,000 new spinal cord injuries occur in the U.S. each year. A majority of injuries occur from motor vehicle accidents, falls, work-related accidents, sports injuries, and penetrations such as stab or gunshot wounds.
