Kessler, one of only five federally-designated Model Systems for the treatment and research of both spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury, provides an unparalleled continuum of care, from comprehensive inpatient treatment to extensive outpatient, community reintegration and lifelong follow-up services. Ranked as the best rehabilitation hospital in the East and one of the top two in the nation by U.S. News, Kessler delivers interdisciplinary, evidence-based treatment and leading-edge technologies to advance individual patient progress.

For more than 65 years, Kessler Institute has pioneered the course of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Today, as the nation’s largest single rehabilitation hospital, we continue to define this field — providing the highly specialized care, advanced treatment and leading-edge technologies that enable individuals with spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, amputation, neurological diseases, musculoskeletal and orthopedic trauma, and cardiac conditions to rebuild their lives.

Spinal Cord Injury rehabilitation at Kessler focuses on the delivery of a comprehensive, highly integrated and intensive program of medical, nursing and therapy care to address the complex needs of each patient, including individuals who require the use of a ventilator.

We provide the earliest possible start to rehabilitation and work to optimize the abilities and independence of our patients so that they may return home. This goal-directed approach enables patients to:

  • improve physical function and mobility
  • develop the skills and strategies to perform daily activities
  • utilize adaptive technologies that facilitate activities at home, work and in the community
  • overcome the psychological and social problems that often interfere with adjustment to life ahead
