Black American woman in a wheelchair Let’s build on all the progress we made this summer at our Roll on Capitol Hill.

Since Members of Congress are back in their home districts through September 9, it is a good time for all of us to follow up again with the messaging and actions below.

We have some exciting news to share following up on the good feedback we received from the Hill on our two main priorities from this year’s Roll on Capitol Hill; reforming rehabilitation for the SCI community; and universal design for self-driving vehicles.

Got Rehab:
Let the advocacy and policy team know at about your good or bad experiences at rehab facilities across the country.

We will be working with you and our SCI physician and clinician colleagues to schedule rehab facility visits with Members of Congress over the coming weeks and months so legislators can build on what they learned from us at the Roll and see for themselves what good SCI rehab is supposed to be.

Cars and the Open Road:
United Spinal is working closely with other disability groups on providing draft legislative language on autonomous vehicles and accessible universal design to Congressional offices. Stay tuned.

Take Back our Air Travel Rights #ACAAA #airtravelrights #accessibletravel

  • Support the Air Carrier Access Amendments Act – S. 669/H.R. 1549 – which provides protections and assistance in air travel for passengers with disabilities.

Support the Civil Rights of People with Disabilities #disabilityintegrationact

  • The Disability Integration Act – S.117/H.R. 555 specifies in Federal Statute that people with disabilities have a federally protected right to a real choice in how and where they receive community services and supports.

Protect Access to Complex Rehab Technology – #CRT Awareness

The CRT community is working together to raise awareness and understanding of CRT and the important role it plays in the health, function, and independence of children and adults with disabilities.

This includes bills in the Senate and House to protect access to manual CRT wheelchairs and accessories, and a House bill to distinguish CRT as a separate benefit category in the Medicare program. The House manual wheelchair bill, H.R. 2293, has been included in two larger health packages that have cleared the Ways & Means and Energy & Commerce committees, both right after our Roll on Capitol Hill, but let’s keep building the momentum together!

Help Keep These Rolling

Protect Complex Rehab Wheelchairs – H.R. 2293 introduced by Representatives John Larson (D-CT) and Lee Zeldin (R-NY) and S. 1223 introduced by Senators Bob Casey (D-PA) and Rob Portman (R-OH) will stop inappropriate Medicare payment cuts for critical components of Complex Rehab Manual Wheelchairs and permanently exclude them from Medicare’s restrictive competitive bidding program.

Take Action

Create Separate Benefit Category – H.R. 2408 introduced by Representatives Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and Brian Higgins (D-NY) will establish a separate benefit category for CRT within Medicare to allow better access and safeguards with improved categories and needed changes in coverage, coding, and supplier standards.
